Situated in the Historic Quarter of Portsmouth Naval Base, the vast 'listed' Boathouse 4 occupies a prominent position overlooking HMS Warrior and is one of the first buildings visitors see when entering the Dockyard.
However, the external cladding was beginning to show its age with rust staining and deteriorating joints. Adding to the challenge of rejuvenating the buildings exterior were numerous shrapnel holes dating back to World War which.
With approximately 1,000m² of external cladding requiring refurbishment, the challenge was to restore and protect this landmark building while addressing its unusual corrosion issues and respecting its historic surroundings.
Working closely with SPR Ltd, Alltimes Coatings developed a tailored refurbishment solution that would deliver 10 years of protection while addressing the building's unique requirements.
We were not permitted to 'patch' over the shrapnel holes, due to their historic value, but we wanted to stop the continuing corrosion. Our technical team recommended treating the shrapnel holes using Advantage Graphene Primer, adopting a similar approach to that used for cut edge corrosion treatment. This provided additional protection to vulnerable areas before the final coating was applied.
Due to the building being listed and the positioning in the Historic Naval Base a dramatic colour change could not be achieved - instead we had the task of matching exactly to it's original colour and funnily enough, that RAL number wasn't to hand. So colour options were presented and selected in consultation with the Historic Quarter client to ensure the refurbished building complemented its surroundings.
With the building situated in such a sensitive and prominent location, controlling overspray was also essential. Our chemists adapted the viscosity of CladRenew® specifically for the project, helping minimise overspray during application.
